On December 7, 1924, a number of faithful Christians shared a desire to reach the community of Amarillo, Texas for Jesus Christ. The organizational membership began meeting in a single room erected on this day. By 1926, the church had implemented a full Sunday School program, Church Training, and Women's Missionary Training.
In July of 1927, the church purchased four lots at West Fifth, and Carolina street in Amarillo. One year later, the educational building was constructed. By 1949, the sanctuary was dedicated. Our church experienced tragedy in 1960 when the education building was completely destroyed by fire. The faithfulness of our membership stood firm in the original vision, dedicating a new educational facility in less than two years. In July of 1969, the preschool building was completed. By 1978, the sanctuary was remodeled, and a new Family Life Center was built.
Today, our vision remains the same; to reach our community and the whole world for Jesus Christ. In 1987, a new facility was dedicated in the "Quail Creek" addition of Amarillo. San Jacinto Baptist Church has grown from a small group of dedicated people in the 1920's, to several thousand members today. We are a church who cares for you! A large number of ministries exist, from a strong Sunday School, to a well established National Television Broadcast. We share the gospel of Jesus Christ and cheerfully contribute to our community.
Each month, hundreds of sacked groceries are given away through our Benevolence Ministry. A service is held in late summer to distribute free school supplies as well. Each November, the church hosts a ministry called "Feeding The Five Thousand" for needy people in our community!
We invite you to browse this web site, and offer any prayer requests you may have. May we also recommend that you visit our Tape and Book Ministry. Here you will find a generous selection of Dr. Coffey's messages on audio cassette, as well as a list of encouraging books he has written.
